BARBARA ROPE
Mosaic Artist
I have always been interested in art in most forms-will eventually try my hand at acrylic painting. At the moment mosaic work is as close to painting as I can get. I am new to this are of the art world.
We have a property right on the West Coast of Northland I could not find anything in the art line to hang on the walls that was genuine west coast based. I decided that a large Snapper would be just the thing to hang on the wall of our outside room and set out to make it mosaics.
I am self taught in the field of Mosaics and my first attempt was very ordinary to say the least but I’m not allowed to remove it! Visitors started to show an interedt in my work so I decided I needed to improve and extend my range of products.
I have done a lot of commission work, I find clients like to choose their own colour schemes, subject, size etc.
I have improved my technique and presentation and all tiles are now sanded by hand. I work with cut tiles, random broken tiles and a combination of both.
I prefer to think of my work as being ‘inside’ art as opposed to ‘garden’ art, as I believe the high UV rate in Northland is detrimental to most things, as a result my work will weather if outside.
I am thoroughly enjoying this new skill and hope to keep improving.
